Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) learning various skills at safe spaces.

My name is NAMBUYA FLORENCE a resident of Nakibanga village in Ntenjeru Sub county Mukono district. I am 20 years old a member of winners’ group Nakibanga
It was back then in 2000 that I was born. I never got a chance to see my biological parents.
My dad died before I was born and my mum died when I was only six months old that’s according to my grandmother that took over control. I grew up with different relatives and I went through a lot of difficulties.
They could abuse me to the maximum and at times I could even run away from home due to the too much torture that I was going through. At times I could go the whole day minus food .it was too much for me. The thing I hated most was the character of auntie of reminding me that all my parent died and that I was nothing in this world apart from being a burden to people.
Later on, my auntie from Mbale came for me, at first, she was kind to me though later changed. She tried to educate me though in vain. School fees was always a challenge because she was a single mother and had other children to take care of. So, I didn’t study much. I managed to study up to senior three and things worsened for me.
In June 2021, I could hold onto the increased torture and mistreatment that my auntie had come up with. I decided to get a boyfriend and perhaps get married hopping that I would get some peace. So, in July of the same year, I moved on with my current husband. He loved me so much but he wasn’t financially stable. We struggled with life but at least I could feel better that before because he wasn’t torturing me compared to my auntie who could beat me up all the time over simple things.
But as the Baganda say that “katonda wabanaku teyebaka” it was that day Sikyomu development Organization came to my rescue.
On 13th/10/2021 our LC1 chairperson announced sikyomu as an Organization that is based on HIV prevention, care and treatment for those that are HIV positive and that I will be restoring hope for the vulnerable girls that are out of school, had given birth, married but below 24 years.
He promised that it would empower girls with life skills and vocational skills, so I decided to join the group in Nakibanga.
At first, I was depressed with the prevention packages like stepping stones because I was yearning for a vocational skill.
In January 2022, winners group agreed to take on bakery as their vocational skill. MR KEN taught though he could come a few times, I managed to focus and get all the knowledge that I could.
And the good news is that I am now the best baker in SAAYI PARISH. I make very nice cakes; I have many orders though can’t serve all my clients due to the limited funds for buying the required materials.
I did it and am expecting my certificate anytime and perhaps my graduation. I extend my appreciation to SIKYOMU development Organization on supporting us amidst the tough situations.
